Napoli head coach Antonio Conte has expressed sympathy for Victor Osimhen following the collapse of the forward’s anticipated transfer this summer.

The Super Eagles striker was expected to leave the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with Chelsea among the clubs interested in securing his services on loan. However, negotiations fell through due to unresolved contract demands.

As a result, Napoli has decided to omit Osimhen from their squad list for the upcoming season, with Conte indicating that the striker no longer fits into his plans. Despite the setback, Conte showed understanding towards Osimhen’s situation, acknowledging that the failure to secure a transfer affected both the player and the club.

In a statement reported by Cult of Calcio, Conte said, “Some issues blocked it; perhaps if we had unlocked that [Osimhen] situation, we would have completed the team differently and earlier. I’m sorry about what happened. I’m sorry for Osimhen. I’m sorry for the club that didn’t monetize.”

Conte praised the club’s consistency in handling the situation, despite the missed opportunity to finalize their squad.

Meanwhile, Osimhen has received support from fellow Nigerian athletes, including football star Asisat Oshoala, as they rally around him after the failed move to Chelsea.
