Super Eagles interim head coach, Austin Eguavoen, has shed light on the recent form of striker Victor Boniface, acknowledging his potential but noting his struggles in front of goal for the national team. This comes after Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over Libya in their AFCON 2025 qualifier.
Speaking after the match, Eguavoen praised Boniface’s striking ability but highlighted his recent difficulties. “Boniface is a clinical finisher, but he’s been struggling to convert chances in national colours,” Eguavoen said. “Sometimes, these opportunities don’t come as often, and decision-making becomes crucial.”
Eguavoen pointed out that Boniface’s hesitation in critical moments has been a key factor in his lack of goals. “I remember in Rwanda, and again today, when players like Romario would instinctively poke the ball, Boniface tends to overthink, allowing defenders to recover,” he added. Despite this, Eguavoen expressed confidence in the young forward’s potential, stating, “If he makes quicker decisions, I believe he will score more goals. I plan to talk to him about it.”
The Super Eagles earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Libya on Friday evening in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, thanks to a late goal by substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Nigeria dominated possession but found it difficult to break down Libya’s stubborn defense throughout much of the game.
With star striker Victor Osimhen sidelined due to injury, Boniface, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon led Nigeria’s attack. However, it was Dele-Bashiru, introduced in the second half, who made the crucial difference, scoring in the 86th minute to secure the win.
Before the breakthrough, Nigeria had several chances to take the lead. Samuel Chukwueze missed a golden one-on-one opportunity in the 70th minute, while Lookman’s goal in the 83rd minute was ruled out for offside. Despite these setbacks, the team’s persistence paid off with Dele-Bashiru’s late strike, sending the home crowd into celebration.
The victory solidifies Nigeria’s position at the top of Group D with seven points, boosting their chances of qualifying for AFCON 2025.
