Cristiano Ronaldo has etched his name in football history once again, becoming the first men’s player to score 900 goals in official matches. The Portuguese star reached this monumental milestone during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Croatia on Thursday in Lisbon.
Ronaldo’s 900th goal came in the 34th minute, when he volleyed a cross from Nuno Mendes from six yards out, putting Portugal ahead 2-0. Portugal went on to win the match 2-1.
“It means a lot,” Ronaldo said after the game. “This was a milestone I’ve been aiming for a long time. I knew I would reach this number eventually, as long as I kept playing and working hard.”
In an emotional celebration, Ronaldo raised his hands to his face and dropped to his knees. “It was emotional because it’s a unique milestone,” he reflected. “It may seem like just another record, but only I and those close to me understand the hard work it takes to stay physically and mentally fit to score 900 goals. It’s an achievement like no other in my career.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner now stands 58 goals ahead of his closest rival, Lionel Messi, who has 842 goals. Brazilian legend Pelé follows with 765. Ronaldo also became the first to break the 800-goal barrier in late 2021 during his second stint with Manchester United.
In addition to his club achievements, Ronaldo has scored 131 goals in 209 international appearances for Portugal, holding the record for the most international goals in men’s football. Messi and former Iran striker Ali Daei are tied for second with 109 international goals.
Ronaldo’s historic achievement further cements his legacy as one of the greatest players in football history.
