“I Want to Be My Own Player” – Lamine Yamal Rejects Messi Comparisons

Barcelona and Spain’s rising star, Lamine Yamal, has expressed his desire to forge his own path in football, stating that comparisons to Lionel Messi are unrealistic and unfair. The teenage sensation, who has already made a name for himself with his record-breaking performances, said it’s “impossible” to reach the level of the Argentine legend.

Yamal’s brilliance first shone through during his time with Barcelona, where he became the youngest scorer in LaLiga history in October last year. His profile skyrocketed this summer after playing a key role in Spain’s triumph at the 2024 European Championship, further cementing his status as one of football’s most exciting prospects.

The 16-year-old not only dazzled throughout the tournament in Germany but also set a record as the youngest player to ever appear in a European Championship, making his debut against Croatia in the group stage. Despite the constant Messi comparisons, Yamal was quick to clarify his stance.

“I like that they compare me to the greatest player in football history, but I want to be myself,” Yamal told Spanish broadcaster Antena 3. “Reaching Messi’s level is impossible.”

Interestingly, Yamal has had an early connection with the football icon. As an infant, he appeared alongside Messi in a 2007 charity calendar photo shoot after winning a contest, a moment he humorously reflects on today.

“Man, he passed along some of his powers to me,” Yamal joked. “But I still have a lot to give.”

Yamal’s talent shone brightest in the semifinal of the Euros when he scored a stunning equalizer against France, setting the stage for Spain’s victory over England in the final.

Beyond his achievements on the international stage, Yamal spoke passionately about his commitment to Barcelona, expressing his hope to spend his entire career at the club.

“I hope I never have to leave. I want to be a legend,” Yamal declared.

Reflecting on his 2023 debut for Barcelona at just 15 years old, Yamal recalled the nerves of that moment. “I remember arriving before everyone else. I was supposed to have breakfast, but I didn’t go. I just waited by the bicycles until everyone left.”

At just 16, Lamine Yamal’s story is only beginning, but with his immense talent and level-headed approach, he’s already making it clear—he’s ready to carve out his own legacy.
